I recently redecorated our guest bathroom to be Slytherin themed, and we now call it the Chamber of Secrets. Your house can never have too much magic, right? This started as a simple job and grew into this wonderful project. And, if you haven’t already seen my Slytherin colored U- No-Poo squatty potty and DIY Poo-pourri spray, it really ties in nicely.
Here is a basic overview of the room.
I found an extremely nice Slytherin shower curtain and used that as a base to decorate around. You’ll have to read the review to see what suits your fancy best, this one was absolutely perfect for what I wanted.
On our last trip to Ikea, we mainly went to get some wooden chests of drawers that I wanted to paint Potter-esque. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/75305709/ I purchased 5 (one for the bathroom and 4 for my craft room closet). I’ll do another post about the process I used for the ones in my craft room. Painting themes and steps to follow.
On the same trip, we found some green striped floor mats that melded well with the color scheme. Of course, they now they have discontinued that one and carry a nicer one (link below) I’ll have to add this one to my shopping list.
Donations are appreciated, but not expected. They go towards craft supplies and site maintenance in order to help bring more fantastic content.
Plus we found some matching towels that were green with thin white stripes. Now they had everything in the other colors as well and you could do any house you choose just change the color scheme up. Easy peasy. I just adore this color!
I wanted to get a canvas laundry basket for the guest room as well, so I went on Amazon and found one that suited my needs. This got a Cricut treatment. Instructions to follow.
Currently, I have the cheap Halloween style brick wall sheets hanging up in there, I have plans to redo them at a later date. It gets the job done and gives the room the ambiance I want until I can tackle that project. From the ceiling/wall opposite of the mirror I have some floating candles hanging because I like the way they look in there. Also on the wall I have Framed Chamber of Secrets and Marauders Map puzzles just to add some pop!
The sink area varies during the holidays but year round it has a set of “basilisk eyes” staring at you from out of the mirror. There is a Slytherin Chamber opening wreath above the sink as well. During parties, I hang a Mrs. Norris from the ceiling/light fixture just for effect. Yes I’m that person, you can’t see my devil horns peeking out can you? Again, more directions to follow.
Snake skeletons, spiders, and other Potter themed projects decorate the area as the seasons change.

Entrance to the Chamber of Secrets wreath
I saw this design in The Unofficial Guide to Crafting the World of Harry Potter and immediately fell in love with the idea.
Arrange the snakes around the wreath to cover the top. Once you are happy with your coverage, use the hot glue gun (careful it is hot!) to attach them. Once the glue dries, spray the entire thing silver, let dry, and hang on the wall.
Slytherin (or any house) themed suitcase chest of drawers
I wanted to keep this one the color scheme for Slytherin in case I needed it in the future. I do want to add decoupage and vinyl, but that’s another phase we’ll do later.
Chest of drawers (any will do as long as it takes paint)
Wood stain (I used Green)
Polyurethane can be matte or semi-glossy
Acrylic glossy paint
Stain/polyurethane/paint cleaning supplies
Corner trim (optional, but looks great!)
upholstery tacks and Tack or regular Hammer
Before assembly of the chest I stained and polyurethaned the frame work inside and out (not the drawers)
Assemble the chest (not the drawers)
Paint the drawer fronts as you wish. Use the ruler and marker to draw an opening line horizontally across the center of each drawer. This is where the suitcase “opens”. I used the painters tape and the ruler to mark all my designs, this took some time to allow proper drying between each layer. The outcome made it completely worth it.
Each drawer’s handle should be centered horizontally, below the horizontal center line. Attach the handle, then mark the locations for the latches. The latches should be located over the horizontal center line on each side to “close” the suitcase.
Assemble the drawers
House elf laundry basket
I wanted a cute laundry basket for this room for guest usage and such.
Canvas laundry hamper
Cricut or similar machine or you could hand cut everything with an xacto knife
Iron-on or htv vinyl
Iron or easy press, Cricut mats, weeding tools
Freezer paper or a towel for pressing
(You could also hand paint your design if you choose)
Assemble your design and decide if you want to use vinyl or hand paint it. Apply vinyl/iron-on being careful to use freezer paper or a towel in-between the iron to not scorch the canvas. I scorched mine and I was terribly upset…then I remembered I had some patches I could tack over the mark and nobody would be the wiser. Shh! Don’t tell anyone.
We will cover more details about floating candles in another post. I will go over a few methods and different designs, but there really is no wrong way.
The hanging Ms Norris is just a fun thing I decided to put up as in CoS as a funny nod to the story line. She is suspended by fishing line.
